How do you define high-quality men’s socks? At Bamigo, we believe high-quality socks should be durable and comfortable. How do we achieve this? We use bamboo fibres and the potential offered by the latest generation of machinery. We then have our socks tested extensively by independent inspection agencies.

Socks that stand up to the test

We were curious to know just how durable our bamboo socks are, and we wanted to find out the point at which the threads in our socks would break. Using a Martindale Abrasion Test, we were able to find out.  Upon meeting the maximum number of rubs (50,000) for a Martindale Abrasion Test, the socks were still hole-free. This indicated that our durable socks don’t wear out easily. To provide a reference point, if upholstery fabrics make it to 50,000 rubs, they’re crowned worthy for intensive use.

What are bamboo socks made of?

Bamboo socks are made of bamboo fibre which are often blended with cotton, lycra, hemp or polyamides. At Bamigo, we use the highest quality, most sustainable bamboo fibre to ensure that your socks not only feel good but are durable and eco-friendly. However, before they take on their essential form, the raw material must be transformed into fabric.

This involves shredding bamboo into tiny particles before boiling them in sodium hydroxide and carbon disulphide. This turns the bamboo into a pulpy substance, which goes through a number of processes until it is converted into bamboo fibres.

Bamboo viscose yarns are then washed, bleached and dried, before being spun and woven into soft bamboo fabric. Although there are a lot of stages in the production of bamboo viscose, we ensure this is done with total respect for the environment and we work with certified suppliers in the production of bamboo clothing.

Why wear bamboo socks?

Bamboo fabric has been around since the 1860s when it was used to make things like bustles, but it is essentially an extremely modern textile that meets the demands of our lives today. You want socks that you can wear on a long hike that will keep your feet cool, dry and not cause blisters? You want to minimise foot infections or wear socks that are less harmful to the planet and that are easy to take care of? Bamboo fulfils all these criteria and more.

  • Bamboo socks help your feet stay cool

You might love your cotton socks, but you may have also noticed they’re not too great at keeping your feet cool and dry, especially if you’re using them for sport. This is because cotton is hydrophilic, which means it attracts moisture. While you probably feel your feet are cool, they may be creating a lovely environment for various bacteria. Bamboo socks on the other hand are thermo-regulating, which means that they adapt to whatever temperature is out there, for example, if you need feet to be cooled down in the summer the structure of your socks will work to do just that, while in the winter they’ll retain warmth.

  • Bamboo socks prevent stinky and smelly feet

If you think your smelly feet are just something you must live with, you’d be wrong. In fact, the socks you are wearing may be the sole (excuse the pun) reason why you suffer from this embarrassing complaint. Medically known as bromodosis, smelly feet are a problem for many people and not just in the summer when it’s hot.

The feet are prone to becoming malodorous because they have more sweat glands than any other part of the body. These glands release sweat regularly throughout the day to keep the skin moist and supple, but the side effect isn’t always pleasant and if you choose to wear socks that actually increase the amount of sweat you secrete then this is not a problem that is going to disappear any day soon.

Swapping cotton or man-made fibre for natural bamboo socks will, however, make a difference. Bamboo wicks away the moisture so that you are no longer creating the damp, dark conditions that allow bacteria to thrive. Bamboo socks are also very absorbent, due to the micro-gaps in the bamboo fibre. The result is feet that are no longer stinky - and that’s what we call a result.

Do bamboo socks last longer?

Yes, is the simple answer. There are several reasons for this, one being that they are abrasion proof, which means they are not constantly being eroded by wear, therefore you’ll be enjoying your Bamigo socks much longer than those made of cotton, or cheaper, synthetic socks. Another reason is that your bamboo socks are resistant to UV rays which also wear materials over time and cause colours to fade and your Bamigo socks won’t lose their elasticity in the same way cotton and other socks will, so they’ll bounce back to the shape they were in when you first bought them.

How do you wash bamboo socks?

Firstly it is not essential to wash them daily, as their antibacterial properties mean they don’t smell like other socks do but when you do feel the need to spruce them up you can do so on a cool wash. This not only stops them from ruining their shape and fading their colour but is also planet-saving. You won’t need to add fabric conditioners to retain their softness either, just don’t clean your socks with bleach as this can damage the fibres.

Wonderfully soft bamboo socks

Do socks with irritating seams and threads that you can constantly feel on your feet sound familiar to you? At Bamigo, we create bamboo socks according to the hand-linking method to ensure that this is a problem of the past. The toe seam is invisible and cannot be felt against the foot. With the use of bamboo fibres, our socks also offer unparalleled softness.
