There are so many reasons why people fall in love with our bamboo sock bamboo socks and the fact they are good for your feet is right up there. Find out more about why bamboo socks are so good.

Are bamboo socks good for your feet?

Bamboo socks will give you greater comfort because they’re not going to rub, chafe or itch like others can. They cushion the foot and care for the skin. Did you know that bamboo is hypoallergenic? This means that even the most sensitive skin can be cocooned in its softness without suffering a reaction. And while cotton, wool and man-made materials contain chemicals, bamboo doesn’t, as the process involved in creating the fabric renders any harmful residues inert.

They are a perfect choice if you want to avoid fungal infections and smelly feet. This is because the structure of the fibres is hollow and that means socks will wick moisture from the skin keeping feet dry.

The verdict: If you want healthier feet, it’s bamboo socks all the way.

Are bamboo socks hardwearing?

Bamboo socks may have the softness of silk and freshness of cotton but they also possess the toughness of a man-made fibre such as viscose, so if you’re the kind of person who finds themselves with holes in their socks after a few wears, you may be surprised by bamboo’s hardiness. Another reason to buy bamboo is that it is an easy material to care for. You can bung your socks in the washing machine and that's that. They’ll retain their softness even in a cool water wash and without the use of fabric conditioners. Just don’t clean your socks with bleach as this can damage the fibres.

Are bamboo socks good for hiking?

When we think of going on a long hike we imagine pulling on big thick woolly socks but these aren’t always a good choice. Wool and other fabrics can cause chafing on long hikes while bamboo ensures far less rubbing. It isn’t just the smoothness of the texture which will enhance your comfort levels. Bamboo is a thermo-regulating fabric that allows your feet to breathe and stay cool in the heat and retain warmth when it is cold. It’s also antibacterial which means that when you finally pull off those boots after covering miles of terrain you won’t be causing everyone to pass out with the smell of horrible stinky feet.

Are bamboo socks antibacterial?

Natural fibres like linen and cotton are the perfect environment for the growth of microorganisms, including pathogenic microbes and fungi and this is especially true when they come into contact with human skin, which because of its warmth, moisture and nutrients is the perfect breeding ground for nasties. Bamboo on the other hand is antibacterial. This is one reason the plant grows so quickly. Bamboo has an inherent natural barricade against bacteria so that many of the bugs that attempt to thrive on the plant are extinguished naturally. This means that even after dozens of washes bamboo will retain its antibacterial properties. Tests have shown that bamboo fabric eliminates over 70 per cent of introduced odour-creating bacteria, which we are sure you’ll agree, can only be a good thing.

Are bamboo socks good for athlete's foot?

Athlete’s foot is caused by the same type of fungus that is also responsible for ringworm and it just can’t get enough of the warm, humid conditions to be found in damp socks and shoes. Ergo, to avoid getting this and other fungal infections you need to keep your feet nice and dry. Take a step forward bamboo! Here is a fabric that is perfect for keeping feet moisture-free. The hollow structure of the fibres are what makes bamboo super-absorbent. This means that the material wicks moisture away from the skin, creating a much less inviting environment for all those bugs. Bamboo is also an extremely breathable fabric which makes it so much more fungal repellent than good old wool. So, if you want to reduce your chances of getting fungal-infected, vote bamboo.

Do bamboo socks help to prevent blisters?

Blisters occur when fluid builds up underneath the upper layer of skin. Shoes that are too tight or too loose can be the cause but so can excessive moisture or perspiration. Sock yarns or fibres are either water-attracting (hydrophilic) or water-repelling (hydrophobic) and natural yarns, especially cotton are hydrophilic, something you don’t need from a sock if you want to avoid getting blisters. Bamboo on the other hand wicks away moisture from the skin, therefore cutting down the chances of you getting blisters. However, if you want to avoid blisters altogether, we do recommend you buy shoes that fit you well too!

Are bamboo socks eco-friendly?

If you are seeking a more environmental material than cotton or wool then look no farther than bamboo. The plant itself is the fastest growing on the planet and can reach full maturity in one to five years. It’s a renewable source as it grows new shoots after being harvested. It needs no chemicals, or pesticides, or fertiliser to grow and bamboo shoots absorb carbon dioxide and release over 30 per cent more oxygen into the atmosphere compared to an equivalent mass of trees.

Bamboo fabric is also 100 per cent biodegradable, stays cleaner than cotton and is also easier to dye than cotton, therefore requires less dye. Its green credentials are impressive but not without some flaws. For example, creating the fabric can require chemical processes that make it less sustainable. Overall, bamboo is pretty much eco-friendly than cotton.

Why are podiatrists recommending bamboo socks?

Why wouldn’t the people who care for our feet want to recommend what is best for them? Bamboo is the perfect solution if you want to maintain foot health. The fact bamboo socks are hypoallergenic means that skin doesn’t get irritated, they ensure moisture keeps away from the feet so ward off fungal infections like athlete’s foot (we are sure no podiatrist wants to deal with that on a day-to-day basis!) The most important thing a sock can do is be both durable and effective at helping to maintain the feet in a dry environment and bamboo fulfils the criteria in spades.
